Judge and Jury.....let's hear it folks.

**Before I start, I want to thank everyone for reading this blog. I try to be honest (probably too honest) and somehow put my thoughts into words. I would love to have more comments from some of you anonymous folk. To post a comment, you need to register for a gmail account. Quite simply, go to Google and get an email address. It's free and then you can tell me how full of crap I am**

I am now going to pass judgement on some of you pour souls.....yep, I am going to award some of you with praise, and give you some good ol Clay Smack Talk if you are unworthy. (Im just joshing...it's just a game)

The GAME is simple and point oriented. I need each of you that have the nerve to post to tell me a little about yourself.

What is required?

First, Tell me your favorite book and the last one you read. If I deem your books worthy, (pop up books and comics will be frowned upon) then you get 5 points a piece.

Secondly, Who is your favorite musician or musical group? After naming them, give me your favorite song. Again, this will be worth 5 points a piece.

Thirdly, I need a guilty pleasure. This is worth 5 points.

Finally, I want you to tell me what is the "Greatest Movie of All Time!" Name the movie and then briefly tell me why it's your favorite. This is worth 20 points.

At some point, I will reveal my own answers for the above mentioned, but this blog is about those that read it and I want to know something about you.

**The reward is that I will go on record and state that you rock and are the most cultured person I know** I'll buy you a coke as well.

Good Luck!!!!

Favorite book. That is hard I have read so many. Johnnys Angel would be on top of my list and I really liked Marley and Me.I usually read books about serial killers. They have to be page turners.Dean Koontz is one of my favortes.James Patterson,Robin Cook, and VC Andrews. The list goes on and on. Nothing Educational.Last book,Dear John by Nocholas Sparks.
Musician. It would be a toss up between Lynard Skynard or Bob Seger.I like country to but really don't have a favorite.I really like most types of music except for that stuff you don't understand like rap.
Movie would have to be Pretty Woman.Happy ending.Julia Roberts is one of my favortes.I bet I have seen this movie at least ten times.
Woops forgot guilty pleasure.Chocolate,Jack and Coke and my homemade carrot cake.Nope sex isn't one of them HAHA...

Roxanne has earned 10 points for her book selections. "Marley and Me" is a classic and I have a stack of Patterson and Koontz novels. 5 points only for naming Skynyrd. She failed to give me a favorite song. "The Ballad of Curtis Low is my fav" Im going to give out 5 points for "Pretty Woman." Cmon, Roxanne...you and I need to spend some time at Blockbuster. So, in the lead with 20 points is Roxanne Wood. Well done.

All Time Favorite Book, without a doubt—One Hundred Years of Solitude, by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Last Book I Read—The Road, Cormac McCarthy

Favorite Musical Group—Ok, there are lots of older bands/musicians that I LOVE that would probably earn me more credible cultured points… but for MY AGE and the music I listened to during the years of my life, my favorite group is The Dixie Chicks. And my favorite song is a tie between Heartbreak Town (I think the Dixie Chicks came to Cleveland, TN to write this song), and their version of Landslide, because I love Stevie Nicks.

Guilty Pleasure—I can eat an entire bag of Reese Cups in one sitting (like the big bags you buy for Halloween trick-or-treaters) and they are best washed down with Blue Moon in a plastic frozen mug I got at Wal-Mart with two orange slices.

THE Greatest Movie of All Time—Citizen Kane, for so many reasons in innovated film-making that I could never list them there… like being the first movie to show the ceiling in a room, deep focusing, sound, make-up, the significance of shadows etc etc etc… but, this is all known to movie-people everywhere… so I’m not saying anything new.
MY Greatest Movie of All Time—(no judgment please) Neil Simon’s Seems Like Old Times. If you know me, you know why I love this movie. No, it definitely would not make History’s Most Amazing Movies of All Time List… but I believe what makes a movie “great” is what it brings out in the person who is watching it. Seems Like Old Times brings back a lot of endearing memories for me, makes me LAUGH hysterically and generally puts me in a feel-good mood. It’s the kind of movie I want to watch on a cold rainy day in my pajamas… or when I’m sick, laying on the couch and just want something to lift my spirits. If any of you have not seen this movie, don’t bother watching it. It won’t mean the same to you, and you will probably find it corny and boring.

I had to throw Citizen Kane out there so I would not be ridiculed for my personal favorite movie choice, and maybe still get some culture points!

Next time, Clay, ask for favorite show. I could do a much better persuasive argument on I Love Lucy than I did on Goldie Hawn chick-flicks. At least Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz have a little more substance in their contributions to the production world.

I want that coke!!

Sister Steph is going to earn 10 points right off the bat for her choice of books. Although, I have never read "Marquez," I have read "The Road," by Cormac McCarthy. It will be required reading at high schools and colleges someday.

Sorry, but Ill give you 3 points for music. The Dixie Chicks are not classic. Are they really that good. "Landslide" is a great song, and they do it justice, but that song was recorded by Fleetwood Mac....and they are a better band.

10 points must be rendered for your "guilty pleasure." I've seen you go at a bag of bacon like a rabid rottweiler, so I know. And, although I prefer Samuel Adams' Cherry Wheat as a beer treasure, I understand your love for Blue Moon. Fruit does not belong in beer, but that is for another time.

Finally...movies. My intention was to get everyone to list their "GOAT" movie, which should be their favorite as well. I understand my sis, your inclination to expound about "Citizen Kane." Cinematically, there is no better......BUT, your choice was "Seems Like Old Times." You get 15 points for this movie.

I love this movie too. The dog biscuits in the garage.....the rabbit bit in the middle of the night in the backyard.....Chevy serving dinner at the end..and even the cheesy ending with that Goldie smile. I have seen this movie upteen times. It was an HBO staple as a kid, and I think Mom liked it too. Oh, and Charles Grodin is the best.

So, your tally comes to 38 points. The lead is yours, for now.

Books:
Marley and Me would be my choice but since it has been taken already...did make me cry though.
I choose Fletch Won and Too as my comedy and A Time to Kill as my drama(gotta love my home state!)

Last Book I read was The Road. Well written, to me a boring story.

Music: Led, Metallica, GNR are my favs, but if I were to pick one, I would go with BNL(Bare Naked Ladies) You can pop in a cd of theirs and not matter the mood your in, you will feel better. Just FUN music. Now if I only had a million dollars I would buy you a monkey, haven't you always wanted a monkey?!.

Songs: Tough.
Favorite: "I still haven't found what I am looking for". I really love the live one with the Oslo T. Choir. Followed by nothing else matters. Even though I HATE country, two of the most powerful to me are The Dance and Unanswered Prayers by Garth.

Movie: Another hard one but I will go with Saving Private Ryan. Not only was it an excellent movie, but I saw it with my grandmother who cried several times during the movie. I will never forget when she look at me with tears and said "Its just like daddy(my grandfather) described to me. Now I can see and feel for the first time why it was so hard for him to relive the past" I believe this the first and last WW2 movie she has ever seen.

Guilty Pleasure: (thought this should be last) I want to say nerds candy, but I am going with SEX. I always want it. I am almost addicted, thank God I have a great wife who can take the several times a week we go at it. I can't keep my hands off her. No kidding.

There you go. Good night, I have been up since 2:30am.

THIS IS EVAN'S REPLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Favorite Book: Lone Survivor, Last Book: On Call In Hell, Favorite Musician: Aerosmith, Song: Sweet Emotion, Guilty Pleasure: Taking Baths, Favorite Movie: A Few Good Men because It has Tom Cruise in his prime, a hot Demi Moore in her prime, Jack Nicholson in his prime, Kiefer Sutherland as a jerk, and some people who can't handle the truth!
I deserve an extra 10 points for being your bro-in-law also!

My favorite book is "Dry" by Augusten Burroughs. If you have not read his stuff you are missing out big time. "Dry" is the second memoir by Burroughs the first being "Running with Scissors". Scissors is a great book but so not watch the movie! The movie is awful and really takes away from his story. Dry is the story of his struggle with alcohol and the journey to get sober. It is so well written you can feel all his emotions along with him. It is laugh out loud funny while at the same time heartbreaking.

The last book I read was Bitter is the New Black by Jen Lancaster. She is just about the funniest person ever. So much so that I read her blog everyday.

My favorite band and song are important to me because they are the band is one thing that has ever brought me and my father together. While my friends were learning mother goose I was listening with my dad to Bob Dylan. My favorite song is "Lay Lady Lay" and running at 1B is Tangerine by Led Zeppelin.

My guilty pleasure is super gross and I have never confessed it to anyone or have I ever let anyone see me do it but I really love Hormel canned tamales. They are gross and I don't know why I eat them but I love them.

Ok favorite movie is hard I have two. You all know that I worship Marilyn Monroe and wish I could be half the beauty she was. She graces both my favorites "Some Like it Hot" and "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes".........give me my coke!

Anchor said...

Bonnie, I LOVE Some Like It Hot!!! Good choice...

Roxanne said...

ok So I forgot favorite song. It would be You've got a friend by James Taylor.I always think of my best friend of all time when I hear it.Can bring a tear to my eye. What can I say I am a sentimental jerk.
Ok Clay I guess I do need to go to BlockBuster.Just don't watch alot. But now to get a little deeper my second movie choice is Shawshank Redemption.

Clay said...

Ok....I have to amend Roxanne's answer. Ill give her 2 additional points for referencing "The Shawshank Redemption." I left out points for her guilty pleasure, so that's 10 more...and she did name a favorite song, so there is an additional 5 points.. So her new total is 37 points.

Clay said...

Brian....Ill give you 5 points for Marley and Me, but listening to "The Road" on audiobook is only worth 1 point.

Fletch is a great movie...Many great quotes and back when Chevy was funny. 5 points.

"A Time to Kill" was John Grisham's best book to date, but the movie was crap. It was long and boring I was SO disappointed. 1 point for it being an Mississippi movie.

Sex is not a "Guilty Pleasure" Its just pleasure. 0 points

10 points for your musical choices. GNR and Metallica have won awards and their albums have always been critical successes. "Appetite for Destruction" is a personal favorite. "Nothing else Matters" is a wonderful song that has great meaning to it. Well done.

Brian's total comes to 17 points...bringing up the rear there buddy. Kind of like your Bulldogs.

Clay said...

sorry..bad math. Brian has 21 points.

Clay said...

Evan does not get points for being my brother in law. If he got me on at Pebble Beach and was already giving me free dental care, then we could talk.

Im going to give him 10 points for this book selections. I have not read either one, but I looked them up and they are highly rated and respected.

15 points goes out for "A Few Good Men." One of my favorite writers, Aaron Sorkin wrote that screenplay. He also created "The West Wing." Besides the great acting and direction, the opening scene with the soldiers doing weapon drills is still captivating. Good choice. Small deduction because I think Cruise was over the top and then very end was cheesy.

10 points as well for Aerosmith and "Sweet Emotion." You really can't argue with either. My personal fav song from them is "The Other Side." I've seen them live before and they are a serious rock and roll band. Also, they continue to tour and record, so again, good choice.

Taking baths. Who am I to judge that? I soak in my garden tub almost daily. Read a little and give my back some rest, but I don't think that consitutes a "guilty pleasure." Playing with your rubber ducky and GI Joe while in tub would have been better. 5 points.

SO, Evan ends up with 40 points and by my calculations, is in the lead.

Clay said...

Now, I have to go over what Bonnie put. Id probably be better off giving her that coke, so I will have food to eat, but I cannot be bought...or intimidated. My rules.

Books....Augusten Burroughs is obviously a great writer. They don't make biography's into movies unless you have some talent and having a writer that you follow like Lancaster is cool. 10 points

Music...Im not a fan of Dylan's voice or even his music, but if you ever just go to a site and read his lyrics..he is a genius. The two songs you picked are wonderful and I sing along when I hear them. 10 points

Guilty Pleasure- just nasty....just nasty. I don't know you. 10 points.

Movie....I understand your love for Marilyn. She is an icon and the original "babe" She married Joe Dimaggio and definetely caught JFK's eye. BUT. I don't think her movies are that great. I don't think they are critically all that much and Marilyn pretty much plays the same role...that of ditzy blond in each. Her sex appeal withstanding, she was not an actress. 5 points.

That give you a total of 35 points, but I still love you.

Clay said...

Totals thus far.

It's early, and I hope to have more people go after that coke.

Clay said...

Another screw up. I forgot about Brian's movie selection "Saving Private Ryan." The first 20 minutes and the last 20 minutes are the standard for which all war movies should strive for in terms of accuracy. This movie is in my collection at home, so that must mean I liked it. 15 points.

Bonnie said...

I was told that I didn't expand on why I love Marilyn Monroe and why I picked her movies as my fav so here goes.To me Marilyn Monroe personified Hollywood glamour. She was more than a '50s sex goddess. Her vulnerability and innocence, in combination with her sensuality, endears her to the world to this day. She was more than just a movie star or glamour queen. Marilyn's popularity has extended beyond star status to icon. Today, the name "Marilyn Monroe" is synonymous with beauty and sensuality. She remains an inspiration to all who strive to overcome personal obstacles for the goal of achieving greatness. For these reasons I love and admire her. I strive to have even a fraction of her courage and heart.

OMG you will not be feed in my house ever again. Watch more than one of her movies and then you may have an opinion. She did not always play the ditzy blonde. Marilyn shed her "shallow blonde" image in 1955. It had gotten her into the spotlight, but now that she had the opportunity and experience, she wanted to pursue serious acting. She took a hiatus from Hollywood and moved to New York City to study under Lee Strasberg at his Actors' Studio. In 1956, Marilyn started her own motion picture company, Marilyn Monroe Productions. The company produced Bus Stop and The Prince and the Showgirl (co-starring Sir Laurence Olivier). These two films allowed her to demonstrate her talent and versatility as an actress. Marilyn received further recognition for 1959's Some Like It Hot, winning a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Comedy. Which has also been listed at number one on AFI's 100 funniest films.....EAT THAT HATER!!!!!

The backlash has begun. This is all based on MY opinions, so take that for what it's worth....nothing.

I am the "Judge and Jury" It even says so at the top of this page.

Brian Smith said...

There goes your "pleasure"...and Damn you for knocking a time to kill. The book is better than the movie and audio book is a "book"-5 points.

The amount of desire for booty is the "guilty" pleasure, but fine I give you Rachel Ray. F*&^%!# Hot and sexy to me...when you mute the TV.

Anchor said...

haaa!!! The Shipps are in the lead!!!!

P.S. Audiobook?! In my world that should deduct points.... as in he gets negative 5 points.

I am not giving extra points to you Bonnie. You gave two movies as your favorite...not one for starters and the quality of those films do not measure up to other movies listed such as "Saving Private Ryan" "A Few Good Men" or "The Shawshank Redemption" These movies won oscars and all are part of pop culture.

Im sorry, but I think you could have come up with a better movie with more substance. Besides, a classic movie should have more than one actress that you particulary like. The sum of its parts is what counts.
